How to Get Your VA Loan Certificate of Eligibility Online

How to Get Your VA Loan Certificate of Eligibility Online

The Quick Read: You request your certificate of eligibility (COE) by signing in to a VA.gov account and filing the online request, or by asking your lender to pull it for you. The COE is VA’s proof that you qualify for the home loan benefit. It does not approve you for a mortgage. Your lender checks credit, income and the property separately.

If you only remember one thing, remember this: the COE is free to request, and you do not have to do it before you talk to a lender. Many buyers let the lender pull it, and then use the online route only when something needs fixing.

Illustrative starting assumptions: a $350,000 price, no down payment with full entitlement, a first-use funding fee financed into the loan, a thirty-year term at the current Freddie Mac benchmark, and property taxes and insurance estimated at typical national rates. Every field is editable.

Illustrative estimate only — not a Loan Estimate, approval, quote, or commitment to lend. The rate field carries the weekly Freddie Mac thirty-year conventional benchmark, a market reference and not a VA loan quote; your rate is set by the lender at lock. The funding fee follows VA’s published table for the use and down payment entered; the residual-income figure is VA’s guideline for the region and family size, and the rough residual shown subtracts only the housing payment and the debts entered, while VA also deducts taxes, maintenance and utilities. Taxes, insurance and dues are editable estimates; closing costs are not included. Licensed in sixteen states for consumer mortgages. What Is a Certificate of Eligibility, and Why Do Lenders Ask for It?

A COE is a document from the Department of Veterans Affairs. VA says the COE is the first step in getting a VA-backed home loan, and that it confirms to your lender that you qualify for the benefit.

Think of it as a service verification. It proves you earned the benefit. It says nothing about whether you can afford the house.

A finished COE typically shows three things:

  • Your entitlement. This is the amount of VA backing available to you.
  • Any entitlement tied up in a prior VA loan. If an earlier loan is still active or was not fully restored, this reduces what is left.
  • Funding-fee exemption status. This matters at the closing table, and it is the field people forget to check.

Across the wholesale programs Lendmire places VA loans with, the COE is the starting document in the file. The underwriting that follows is a separate process, and I’ll walk through where it picks up.

Do You Need the COE Before You Talk to a Lender?

No. Most borrowers do not need to get it first. VA’s home loan FAQ lists three ways to get one: request it online yourself, ask your lender to use VA’s Web LGY online system, or mail VA Form 26-1880 to a regional loan center.

Here is how I’d choose between them.

Route Best for What you need
Lender pulls it Most buyers SSN and year of birth
You request online Fixing issues, early planning VA.gov account, service proof
Mail the paper form Last resort Form 26-1880, copies of papers

Mail requests may take longer than the other two routes. The form itself encourages applicants to use VA.gov or a lender for faster processing. Mail is not the standard path anymore.

The lender route is the default. The lender enters your Social Security number and year of birth into the system, and in many cases a COE comes back in seconds. Choose the online route yourself when you want it in hand before you shop, when you expect a record problem, or when you want to see your entitlement before you talk numbers.

What to Gather Before You Start

Your proof of service depends on your status. VA’s request page lists the documents.

Your status Proof VA asks for
Veteran Discharge or separation papers (DD214)
Active duty Statement of service signed by your command
Activated Guard or Reserve DD214 or discharge documents
Never-activated Guard or Reserve Guard-specific forms or retirement points plus proof of honorable service
Surviving spouse A separate VA pathway

For active duty, the statement must show your full name, Social Security number, date of birth and the date you entered duty. It also needs lost time and the command’s name.

Guard and Reserve rules vary by service period, and a few details turn on how your orders were issued. I’m not going to state minimum service lengths here, because VA’s eligibility page is the authority and it changes. Check it for your era of service.

Surviving spouses use a separate VA pathway. Their eligibility rests on the veteran’s military service.

Have a digital copy of your papers ready before you sit down. Scanning at the last minute is where requests stall.

How Do You Request the COE Online? Step by Step

Here is the online path from start to finish.

1. Sign in to VA.gov. You need a verified VA.gov account. Use the sign-in option VA offers you. Identity verification can take a few minutes the first time, so don’t start it with a deadline looming.

2. Open the COE request form. VA’s FAQ gives the direct path: va.gov/housing-assistance/home-loans/request-coe-form-26-1880/introduction. The online tool replaces the paper form.

3. Enter your service details. Match them to your DD214 exactly. A name that differs from your discharge papers is a common reason a request does not auto-issue.

4. Submit, then see which of two things happens. Either VA already holds matching service data and issues the COE, or the request goes to review.

5. Upload documents if asked. Use the same account. Uploading is not always required, but it can prevent delays.

6. Download the COE and give it to your lender. Save a copy somewhere you can find it.

One rule matters here. Do not file a second request while the first is under review. VA asks applicants not to, and a duplicate won’t move you up the line.

What Happens After You Submit?

Four outcomes are possible, and only one of them is a problem.

Outcome What it means Your next move
Instant COE VA matched your data Download and send to lender
Pending review VA needs a person to look Watch status, upload papers
Request for documents Records did not match or were missing Upload what VA asks for
Contact the loan center Something needs a human fix Call VA

Notice the point most articles skip: no instant COE does not mean you are ineligible. It means VA could not match your data automatically. Plenty of eligible people go through review.

Sign in to the COE status page to see where your request stands, read VA letters, upload additional documents and download your COE once approved. VA’s goal for contacting applicants is an average of 5 business days, and that applies when manual review is needed.

If It Doesn’t Come Back Right Away: Troubleshooting

Most delays trace back to a small number of causes.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Request goes to review No matching service data Upload your service papers
Name does not match Name changed since service Upload legal name-change documents
Lender’s pull fails Same data mismatch Request online and upload proof
Status sits pending Waiting on VA Check status, don’t resubmit

Lenders see the name problem a lot. The information entered has to match your DD214, and VA’s lender guide notes that a last-name change may require legal documentation. Marriage, divorce and legal name changes are the usual sources.

If your records are in order and the lender’s pull still fails, don’t assume you’re stuck. A self-request with uploaded papers often resolves what the automated match could not.

How to Read Your COE and Fix Mistakes

Read the COE the day you download it. Check four fields: your name, your branch, your entitlement and your funding-fee exemption status.

The exemption flag is the one with real money attached. The VA funding fee is a one-time charge on a VA loan that can be financed into the loan amount. Across the wholesale programs we place files with, it runs from 1.25% to 3.3% depending on whether it is your first use and how much you put down. It is waived for veterans receiving compensation for a service-connected disability, along with other exempt groups. With the wrong status, a fee can show up on your Closing Disclosure that should not be there.

You can correct errors without starting over. A “Correct COE” option lets you edit your name, contact information, branch or exemption status. You can also resubmit Form 26-1880.

A few cautions on exemption status:

  • A disability rating that comes through before closing and is reflected on the COE is what counts.
  • A pre-discharge rating or an active-duty Purple Heart can qualify, but you need the evidence in hand by closing.
  • A Purple Heart veteran who is no longer on active duty and has no compensation may not be covered. Ask your loan officer how VA treats your award.
  • Do not count on a refund after closing. Get the status right first.

Special Situations

Prior VA loan use. If you have used the benefit before, your COE shows how much entitlement is charged to the earlier loan. VA lets you request a COE with an entitlement restoration online. Lendmire’s piece How to Get a VA Loan Certificate of Eligibility After Prior Use covers that path in detail.

Guard and Reserve. Service counts differently depending on whether you were activated and under which authority. If you’ve never been activated, expect to provide Guard-specific records. For the full picture, see Lendmire’s piece VA Loan Eligibility Requirements for National Guard Members.

Missing discharge papers. Request a replacement DD214 before you apply. Chasing it after you’re under contract is stressful.

IRRRL. A streamline refinance of an existing VA loan has its own proof-of-eligibility rule. A COE is not the only acceptable proof there.

Surviving spouses. Use the separate pathway noted above.

Watch Out for Lookalike Sites

The COE request is free. VA’s own tools do not charge you to file, check status or download.

Anything that asks for payment to “process” your COE is not VA. Start from va.gov and type the address yourself. Be skeptical of search ads that mimic the VA’s look. When in doubt, call the number above.

Key Terms Defined

Certificate of Eligibility (COE): VA’s document confirming you qualify for the home loan benefit and showing your entitlement.

Entitlement: The amount of loan backing VA provides to you, which a prior VA loan can reduce.

Funding fee: A one-time VA loan charge that can be financed into the loan, and that is waived for exempt borrowers.

Residual income: The money left each month after major obligations, which is the controlling test in VA underwriting.

Web LGY: VA’s online system lenders use to request a COE.

DD214: Your discharge or separation paper, the standard proof of service for veterans.

What Happens After You Have the COE?

The COE gets you to the starting line. VA states that you must also meet credit, income and occupancy requirements from VA and your lender.

From here, the lender takes over. Credit, income, residual income and the VA appraisal are separate steps, and none come from the COE. The appraisal covers value and the property’s minimum condition standards.

Here is the shape of the program you’re moving into. On a purchase, VA loans allow 100% financing with no down payment, as long as the price is not above the appraised value. There is no mortgage insurance of any kind, and no VA loan limit with full entitlement. With only partial entitlement left, a down payment may be required, so speak with a loan officer about your situation.

VA sets no minimum credit score. The wholesale programs Lendmire places VA loans with start at a 580 decision score, though every figure is subject to lender guidelines and full file review.

Underwriting leans on residual income. The 41% debt-to-income figure is a guideline, not a cap. A higher ratio simply needs residual income well above the table.

Lendmire is a mortgage broker, so it arranges these loans through wholesale lenders rather than lending directly. If you are buying a home and want to see whether a VA loan fits your file, Lendmire can help you compare the options and what each one asks of the file. You can also read about its VA loan programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the COE mean I’m approved for a VA loan?

No. The COE confirms service eligibility and entitlement only. Credit, income and occupancy requirements still apply, and your lender reviews them separately. Nothing here is a commitment to lend.

Can my lender get the COE for me?

Usually, yes. VA lists the lender route as an option, and lenders request it through VA’s online system. If the automated match fails, you may need to request it yourself and upload documents.

Should I resubmit if my request is slow?

No. VA asks applicants not to submit a second request while the first is under review. Sign in to the status page to check progress and upload anything VA asks for.

What if my name changed since I served?

Expect to provide legal documentation. The information has to match your discharge papers, and a last-name change may require proof such as a marriage certificate or court order. Upload it to your request.

Do I need to mail the paper form?

Rarely. Form 26-1880 is the paper option, but VA encourages the online or lender route and notes that mail may take longer. Keep paper as a fallback.
